Meet the Augusta Mountainairs for 2017.
There are seven teams in the National Basketball League this season:
The season runs from mid-March until mid-June, with each team playing 18 games — nine home and nine away.
Trent Adam, who was assistant coach last year, has been promoted to head coach this year, with David Bublitz in the assistant coach role.
Our two imports this year are Daniel Gomis and Tylor Ongwae.
We have also recruited Alonzo Burton from Hawkes Bay (though he was born in Taranaki).
Captain Aaron Bailey-Nowell is back for the season, leading fellow returning local players from 2016: point guard Houston O’Riley, Brad Anderson, Beauden Giddy, Lachie Fenwick, Thane O’Leary and Matthew McConnell.
Xavier Shaw has come home after two seasons with Canterbury while he furthered his studies. Dane Brooks also returns to Taranaki after a year at college in Philadelphia.
Aucklander, Jaylen Gerrand, is back in the country after a year in the US as well, with development player, Brayden Inger, also from Auckland, rounding out the squad.
We have also recruited Jordan Ngatai, who has just finished the ANBL season as a development player with the Breakers, and Tony Tolovae, a development player with the Illawara Hawks.
Fresh out of high school is Logan Elers of Rotorua, who will join Taranaki’s own crop of talented youngsters who have just completed their education, or are still at school: Quintin Bailey, Thane O’Leary and Emmerson Potts-Broughton.
Local men returning again this season are Brad Anderson, Houston O’Riley, Lachlan Fenwick, Jackson Stubbins (originally from Hutt Valley), Beauden Giddy, and your captain, Aaron “Aunty” Bailey-Nowell.
